In a recent interview with Boxing King Media, Egis Klimas, Oleksandr Usyk’s promoter, revealed that the Ukrainian champion may already have his sights set on a new opponent if he defeats Tyson Fury in December. Despite having already claimed the heavyweight title and defeating three of the division’s best, Usyk remains determined to continue proving his superiority in the ring.
Usyk, who has earned respect with victories over Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois, and Tyson Fury, has established himself as one of the world’s best boxers. The 37-year-old Ukrainian will face Fury again on December 21 in Riyadh, aiming to repeat the split decision victory he achieved earlier this year against the 6-foot-9 British fighter.
Although some might think Oleksandr Usyk could retire if he beats Fury, Klimas insists that the Ukrainian has another goal in mind: a rematch with Daniel Dubois, the IBF champion. According to Klimas, Usyk’s team believes a second fight with the british boxer is essential to resolve any doubts left from their first encounter.
“Would we set up a fight with Dubois if Usyk beats Fury? Absolutely. I don’t think anyone else is left in the heavyweight division,” Klimas said. He recalled that their first fight was controversial when many argued that a blow Usyk received on the beltline wasn’t a low blow, although the referee ruled it as such.
“The referee gave us recovery time, and I believe any smart fighter would use that chance,” Klimas added.
For his part, Dubois has experienced a notable resurgence since his loss to Usyk last summer. Since that defeat, Dubois has strung together victories over fighters like Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic, consolidating his status in the division before his historic victory over Anthony Joshua in August.
Daniel Dubois will enter 2025 brimming with confidence after his recent wins, and with Oleksandr Usyk nearing 40 years old, some see the Londoner with a real chance of beating him. The rematch with Fury is Usyk’s primary objective, but a fight with Dubois seems to be the next step on his agenda if he emerges victorious once again.
