Oscar De La Hoya has revealed who he believes is currently the number one pound for pound fighter in the sport of boxing.
One of the pound for pound kings himself during the 1990s, De La Hoya shared the ring with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Arturo Gatti before calling time on his professional career in 2008.
Now the head honcho at Golden Boy Promotions, the Mexican has worked with some of the best fighters of the last decade, including Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Bernard Hopkins and Amir Khan.
And when asked by FightHype who he believes is currently the number one fighter in boxing, De La Hoya sided with consensus pick Terence Crawford.
“The best pound for pound fighter in boxing right now? In my eyes, it has to be Crawford. Who he’s beat and how he’s beat them, I think his resume speaks for itself.”
Crawford’s stunning win over Errol Spence Jr back in July saw him almost universally anointed pound for pound by the boxing world, after he dominated the Texan from the off before scoring a ninth round stoppage.
It looks like he may have to do it all over again, after news earlier this month that Spence had triggered a contractual rematch clause.
However, there is reportedly a disagreement over what weight a second fight will take place, with Spence keen on moving up to light middleweight.
Although ‘Bud’ seemed happy to oblige him in the immediate aftermath of their first encounter, this seems to have changed and, as the A side, he holds all the cards.
