Oscar De La Hoya has weighed in with a prediction for a potential clash between lightweight stars Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis.
Haney currently holds all the marbles as undisputed champion at 135lbs, however Davis is without doubt the biggest commercial star in the division.
And De La Hoya believes that, although Haney’s recent twelve rounds with Vasiliy Lomachenko will serve him well, Davis would prove too great an obstacle to overcome.
“Wow, it’s a great fight. I would have to pick ‘Tank,’ but Haney learned a lot from his fight with Loma.”
“But ‘Tank’ is a beast.”
Due to promotional barriers and uncertainties on weight, a fight between the two Americans will almost certainly not be happening any time soon.
However, it seems unthinkable that Haney and Davis’ paths will not cross at some stage during their careers as both are amongst the biggest stars in the entire sport
Haney retained his WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight world titles after a razor thin win over Lomachenko at the MGM Grand in May.
There has been much speculation over what his next move will be, with many feeling like it was an inevitability he would move up to 140lbs for a clash with either Regis Prograis or Teofimo Lopez.
However, reports suggest remaining at lightweight could be a possibility for ‘The Dream,’ and he has been linked to both a fight with Stevenson and a rematch with Lomachenko.
Davis has just been released from prison, and fans will hope he resumes his career and is back in the ring by the end of the year following a stellar win over Ryan Garcia in April.
