July 14 will be a significant date for boxing fans all around the globe as one of boxing’s biggest stars in the modern era enters into the ring perhaps for the last time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Manny Pacquiao has achieved everything and more in boxing by being the only eight-weight world champion alive. He tasted defeat for the seventh time in his last fight against Jeff Horn after a controversial decision and failed to retain the WBO World welterweight title.
However, ‘Pac Man’ will get another shot at gold when he challenges Lucas Matthysse for the WBA World welterweight title and a lot of questions will be answered regarding the Philippino’s future in the sport.
“If my body does not respond anymore why am I pushing myself?” said Pacquiao according to BBC.
“This fight is the answer of all those questions,” added the former world champion.
Pacquiao famously hired new coach Buboy Fernandez and cut ties with his longtime trainer Freddie Roach, who has adviced the boxer to call it a career.
But with the memory of fighting Floyd Mayweather apparently still fresh in the back of his mind and flirting with the idea of taking on UFC star Conor McGregor, the 39-year-old is eager to get a big money fight after Matthysse.
“It is possible,” said Pacquiao when talking about a rematch against ‘Money’ Mayweather.
“As long as he will come back and continue fighting there is a chance.”
