Devin Haney’s win over Vasiliy Lomachenko last month has split opinion amongst the boxing fraternity more than any most than most fights in recent memory.
Despite the fact all three ringside judges awarded the contest to Haney, most observers online seemed to side with ‘Loma,’ although the fight was undoubtedly close and could have gone either way.
However, in a recent interview with Fight Hub, Regis Prograis admitted he felt the Ukrainian was hard done by.
“If it was just Devin Haney vs Lomachenko, with no belts on the line? I definitely feel like ‘Loma’ won that fight – hands down.
He controlled more of the rounds than Devin did, he hit him with more effective shots. Devin hit him with a lot of shots, but it seems like Lomachenko’s were more effective.
I have to watch it again, but I still stick to it that Loma won that fight.”
Contrary to Prograis’ comments, all three scorecards on the night awarded defending champion Haney the win – 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 – despite the fact he landed only 110 punches to Lomachenko’s 124.
With Haney emerging victorious, it looks likely that Top Rank will try to match him against the unbeaten Shakur Stevenson, that’s if ‘The Dream’ decides to stay at 135lbs and defend his undisputed title.
However, talk of a clash between Haney and Prograis has gained traction on social media, with many expecting Haney to move up to light welterweight, where Prograis holds the WBC world title.
‘Rougarou’ must first get past Danielito Zorilla on June 17th in New Orleans, his first outing since signing promotional terms with Matchroom.
