Trainer Eddy Reynoso has said Canelo Alvarez could still box before the end of the year with the Mexican star remaining in the gym while his fighting future is resolved.
Canelo is currently in limbo. The Covid-19 Pandemic cancelled a projected bout against WBO 168lbs champion Billy Joe Saunders in May before the Mexican star filed a lawsuit against his promoter Golden Boy Promotions and the broadcaster DAZN, which has a multi-fight deal with Canelo.
Yet Reynoso says Canelo remains in shape in the gym and could be ready to fight in just four weeks though time is running out with little over two months left in the year.
“We are really working as if we were going to fight, we have always had that criterion, you have to be in the gym for whatever comes. So, we have confidence that we can do something before the end of the year and, if not, to fight in the early months of the following year, that’s why we are active and we are working in the gym daily,” Reynoso told ESPN Deportes.
Every world class fighter between 160lbs and 175lbs is angling for Canelo and the lucrative payday attached, but unified welterweight champion Errol Spence also threw his name into the mix recently. Yet Reynoso doesn’t believe Canelo will be competing at 160lbs in the short-term ruling that one out. WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo remains an appealing option for 2021.
“With what Spence says [about fighting Canelo at middleweight], it would be a good fight, it’s difficult [to make] because of the weight [differential]. To begin with we have to see how he returns [after his car accident]. I don’t think we can make 160-pounds right now after a year without fighting. These are factors that can be complicated,” added Reynoso.
“[Caleb] Plant has been showing that he is a very good fighter at 168. [Callum] Smith is [still] at 168. It was shown the last time he fought that, in my opinion, he did not win the fight [against John Ryder]. I don’t think he can handle 168lbs any longer. [Jermall] Charlo has been rising, he has been advancing, it would be a big and important fight, but that fight has to take place next year.”
