The Charismatic Chris Eubank jr looks to be the second British boxer to book his place in the Super Series tournament this weekend when he faces undefeated Turk Avni Yildirim in Stuttgart. He could join Liverpool’s Callum Smith who had to work hard in his hometown last month to fend off a tough challenge from Swedens Erik Skoglund, to progress to the semi-final of the lucrative Super Middleweight competition.
Eubank is very confident he can beat Yildirim in emphatic fashion and thinks the big challenge in the tournament for him is WBA Champion George Groves, who himself fights Swindon’s Jamie Cox in his quarterfinal in an excellent domestic showdown at Londons Wembley Arena on October 14th.
Yildirim alias ‘Mr Robot’ who is two years younger than Eubank Junior does live up to his nickname. He boxes square on and is easy to hit, with little head movement, in an aggressive come forward style, but he does, however, look strong and tough and has good workrate which has brought him 10 Knockouts in his 16 wins, most of which were also at light heavyweight before dropping down to super middleweight late last year.
A decent amateur, competing in the World Championships in 2013, but lost early in the competition. As a professional, he has fought opponents with winning records and travelled to fight them on their home turf showing confidence in his own ability.
Eubank Jr, however, exudes confidence and skill and is coming off his best win over an ageing but very experienced former World Champion Arthur Abraham with a comprehensive points win in July and still just has that one blemish to the excellent WBO Middleweight king Billy Joe Saunders almost three years ago.
This is a competition that could well be made for Eubank Jr to shine, and this should be the type of fight that brings out the very best in the Brighton man, as the tough Turk Avni Yildirim marches forward, Eubank jr should be able to show his speed and class with accurate combinations stamping his authority and booking his place in a truly super all British semifinal.
