Floyd Mayweather famously proclaimed himself as ‘TBE’ – the best ever. Though there is no true consensus number one fighter of all time, few would argue that Mayweather was a generational talent and a certified all time great.
However, former four weight world champion Roy Jones Jr has revealed he does not hold Mayweather in quite as high regard as some.
In a recent interview with Podghost, Jones also explained why he feels Mayweather gets too much credit for beating the version of Manny Pacquiao that he did back in 2013.
“I would not be able to take credit for beating Pacquiao after he got knocked out by Marquez, because that’s not the same Pacquiao. That’s not the Pacquiao who was on top of his game.”
“But in society today, we’ll call that person the best fighter ever, when that’s not how it goes. That’s not reality. But in the business world, it is – look at how much money he made!”
Jones himself is considered an all time great, having won world titles from middleweight up to heavyweight during his 76 fight career.
Like Mayweather, Jones has tried his hand at exhibition contests since retiring from the professional game, famously taking on former undisputed heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson back in 2020.
As for ‘Money,’ you’d be hard pressed to find someone he wouldn’t fight if the price is right. The now 46 year old has faced reality TV stars, MMA fighters, YouTubers in exhibition bouts, which he himself has described as “legal bank robberies.”
