Roy Jones Jr has given his thoughts on a potential clash between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia – and said it could be this generation’s answer to Sugar Ray Leonard vs Tommy Hearns.
Speaking to FightHype.com, Jones stated he believed both Davis and Garcia were in their respective primes and was full of praise for the fight.
“I think it’s a beautiful fight. To me both of them are very good fighters and are both at the top of their game.”
“Tank may have a few more rounds under his belt but both are very good, positive fighters and I think it’s a great fight.”
“To be honest with you I liken it to Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns back in the day. It comes down to whoever can make their mark first – they’ll probably win the fight.”
Although the bout is yet to be agreed, bookmakers already have Davis as a betting favourite, a view seemingly shared by large swathes of fans online.
However, Jones believes that Garcia’s punching power means he cannot be overlooked if the two men do step in the ring.
“I don’t consider him [Garcia] an underdog because of the explosiveness in his punches. Ryan’s a very explosive puncher, that’s what people don’t understand.”
“I know he’s been down, and we haven’t seen Tank down, but Ryan does have the punching power to get people out of there.”
Although an official fight date is yet to be set, there is long term bad blood between Davis and Garcia, which again went public when the two got embroiled in a spat on Twitter last month.
A fight between the two undefeated stars is one of the biggest to be made in the sport, and although there are promotional barriers to be overcome, there is a view that the two camps are creeping ever closer to an agreement.
