Roy Jones Jr has spoken out about Anthony Joshua’s decision to train under Derrick James, and implored the Brit to remain where he feels comfortable.
Joshua had been linked to Jones after the pair were spotted having a conversation in Abu Dhabi towards the end of last year.
However, the former unified world champion has made the decision to relocate to Dallas and work in James’ gym, which boasts the likes of Jermell Charlo and Errol Spence Jr.
Jones gave his thoughts on Joshua’s decision in an interview with October Red Boxing.
“I told Joshua, if he feels comfortable with Derrick James, then stay with Derrick James – don’t come to me.
Stay where you’re comfortable, because fighters need to be comfortable.”
James’ fighters are known for an aggressive and spiteful approach, and many feel this could be the perfect remedy to the perceived tentativeness that has crept into ‘AJ’s game in recent fights.
The link up will first be put to the test against Jermaine Franklin on April 1st in what is considered a must win fight for Joshua if he is to have aspirations of becoming a three time world champion.
‘The 989 Assassin’ pipped the likes of Demsey McKean and Otto Wallin to land the big money fight, reportedly because James wanted Joshua to face an orthodox fighter to prepare for potential blockbusters with Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder.
Franklin put up a good performance in defeat to Dillian Whyte last November, with some feeling the American was hard done by not to get the nod that night.
However, Joshua goes into the contest as a firm favourite and a big stadium rematch with old foe Whyte looks to be set for the summer should he prevail against Franklin at the 02 Arena.
