A rebooted Andy Ruiz is set to return to the ring in 2021.
Since losing his crowns to Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia last December, the former WBA Super, WBO and IBF champion has linked up with Canelo Alvarez’s respected trainer Eddy Reynoso and believes he still has a significant role to play in the heavyweight division.
Fellow Mexican-American Chris Arreola seems to likely to be Ruiz’s comeback opponent as he attempts another run at the heavyweight titles.
“I’m going to be fighting very soon. We’re going to train hard, I’m going to fight next year,” Ruiz (33-2, 22 KOs) told Miguel Rivera of Boxing Scene. “I’m going to be focused on what I should do. We still don’t know who [the opponent will be]. They tell me there are some opponents.”
On Wednesday, Ruiz returned to the San Diego gym where Reynoso trains the likes of Canelo, Luis Nery, Ryan Garcia and Oscar Valdez – with renewed fire in his belly following that disappointing loss to Joshua, who he shocked in seven rounds in New York in June 2019.
“It’s going to get good, I’m excited,” said Ruiz. “I’ve trained a bit, but I’m going to start [Wednesday] with Eddy and everyone there. I can’t wait any longer, it’s going to be fun. Ryan is there, Oscar Valdez will be there, [Luis Nery] who just fought and won. I’m excited at being part of the Canelo Team.”
