The WBC lightweight title final eliminator between Ryan Garcia and Isaac Cruz looks unlikely to go
ahead.
Garcia, who returned to action last month beating Emmanuel Tagoe, had been calling for a fight between himself and ‘Pitbull’ and finally got his wish when just over a week ago the WBC ordered the bout to happen.
‘KingRy’ is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Fightnews spoke to their president Eric Gomez about the situation.
“We did everything possible to make this fight. We also petitioned the WBC to do an immediate purse bid and it got denied. It’s very clear to us now that Isaac’s team doesn’t want the fight.” Garcia himself made his feelings known on Twitter.
“I’ll go and headline at Staples Centre, July 16 while you guys use someone as a pawn.
“His idiotic manager Sean Gibbons has nothing but disrespected to me and lied to me on other occasions.
“The things I say aren’t necessarily towards Cruz but sometimes people need to face reality! His management team who was or is part of Manny Pacquiao’s team straight cost me a Gervonta [Davis] fight in the past by straight lying to me about that Manny fight. And now bullshitting again.”
In February 2021 Garcia announced to the world that he would be facing the Filipino icon in a sanctioned bout or exhibition. One month later it was revealed that the event would not go ahead ‘due to some issues’. Gibbons has worked as an advisor to Pacquiao and as president for his promotional company.
