Super-lightweight title hopeful Ryan Garcia has declared his belief that his fight with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis would have played out differently, if one factor was changed, despite the one-sided nature of what remains as his lone defeat in the ring thus far.
Garcia announced that he would never fight at lightweight again, months before he agreed to take on Davis at an ironic catchweight of 136lbs, just one pound above the lightweight limit.
Additionally, a rehydration clause was inserted into the contract of the fight, restricting the amount that Garcia could weigh on fight night.
‘King Ry’ was dropped in the second-round and hurt by a body shot in the seventh, forcing him to take a knee and sit out the count, suffering a first career loss.
However, Garcia has since returned to super-lightweight, and now challenges a world title for the first time in his career, taking on WBC champion Devin Haney next month.
During their face-to-face on DAZN, Garcia claimed that if his fight with ‘Tank’ took place at 140lbs, it would have been he who secured a knockout win.
“If I was 140lbs, Tank would have got knocked out, and Tank knows that. You know how scared he look in his eyes when I hit him in the second-round? I swear I have never seen anybody more scared in my life.
“He was running, he was terrified. You know what he said? He goes [pre-fight] ‘if I drop you like Luke Campbell [did], I am going to go after your a**’, he dropped me and he didn’t take a step forwards. Why is that? Think about it.”
Haney-Garcia goes ahead on April 20th , live on DAZN, in one of 2024’s standout events.
