Ryan Garcia didn’t have long to bask in the glory of his breakout win against Devin Haney before news broke that he failed a drug test before and after the contest and now he has revealed his shock excuse for the result.
Garcia has not been far away from the boxing headlines for the whole of 2024. After protracted negotiations to secure his next fight, he finally signed for an epic clash with Devin Haney, and then set about building hype in weird and wonderful ways.
He claims his antics in the lead-up to the fight on April 20 were purely about telling his opponent while many onlookers worried he was showing signs of someone suffering from serious mental health issues.
He fired constant abuse at Haney about everything from his record to religion, complained about ticket prices and the location of the fight and much more. All of this made it all the more impressive when he turned up on the night and put on the best display of his career.
He started fast and went on to knock down ‘The Dream’ three times before coming out on top with a 12-round points win that saw Haney take his first defeat. The WBC champion retained his status, however, as Garcia failed to make weight so he was not able to lift the belt.
News emerged this week that Garcia failed a test before and after the fight, and now he has taken to X to protest his innocence.
Along with photos of clean test results that he returned in the lead-up to the fight, he claimed again that his levels were too low to be cheating.
“My levels are so low for Someone who took ostarine. I was posting throughout training and non of my test came out positive. All of a sudden I’m positive??? We know what it is!!!!”
A second message delved into the realms of conspiracy theories.
“Second part of the matrix attack. Like Andrew Tate and my self. They make false claims and try to ban me from boxing or put me in jail. Crazy 🤯🤯🤯”
If Garcia is to fight again any time soon, he is going to have to prove his innocence, otherwise, he could be facing a length ban and time out of the sport as Amir Khan was suspended for two years for testing positive for the same drug back in 2022.
