Sam Jones has spoken out about the latest developments in the Conor Benn saga, saying the situation as a whole has cast a dark cloud over the sport.
Speaking to SecondsOut, Probellum frontman Jones did not mince his words when asked for his opinion.
“It’s a mess, isn’t it? The whole thing is a s***show, it’s been handled terribly and it makes boxing look bad.”
“I hope Conor Benn can somehow prove that he’s innocent, I really do. I’ll be the first person to say ‘Conor, I’m sorry for saying you cheated.’ Because from what we can all see, he has cheated.”
The British Boxing Board of Control released a statement last week, revealing Benn had relinquished his license ahead of a scheduled hearing which he subsequently did not attend.
And Jones provided an interesting analogy to give his explanation for why ‘The Destroyer’ may have made this decision.
“The giving up of the license – it’s like when you’re in school and you hear you’re getting dumped, so you get one of your mates to run and tell your girlfriend that she’s dumped first!”
“That’s what it’s like, trying to get there first. That’s what I take from it.”
Despite handing in his license, Benn has maintained his innocence and reiterated his desire to prove himself as a clean athlete in a statement last week.
However, the 25-year-old also admitted he failed second drug test in July of this year, leaving his guilt in little doubt in the eyes of many fans.
