Sebastian Fundora vs Jermell Charlo Appears to be Next: ‘Seems Like it Makes Sense’

The impression being given by both Sebastian Fundora and Jermell Charlo is that they will be squaring off against each other in their next fight.

Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KOs) put in a dominant display this past Saturday to stop Keith Thurman inside six rounds while defending his WBC super welterweight title, with Charlo sitting ringside.

“I think that is a great fight,” Fundora said at the post-fight press conference, while responding to a question regarding a potential bout with Charlo. “It’s a great fight and a PBC fighter as well. The last undisputed 154 [pound] champion as well. So, you know that fight seems like it makes sense.”

While Fundora has been staking his claim for the best fighter in the super welterweight division, Charlo has not fought since losing to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez at super middleweight in September 2023. Charlo had previously secured undisputed status at 154 pounds, two weight classes below, against Brain Castano in May 2022.

Charlo was seen ringside throwing some hype at the PBC social media accounts following Fundora’s victory on Saturday in Las Vegas.

“Great fight Fundora,” Charlos said. “I don’t know what Keith Thurman was on, but guess what? If you are keen, I’m letting you know. We are here! We know what it is. You know you can’t f*** with me.”

Regardless of who Fundora will face, the fighter himself appears unfazed, and believes he’s done enough now, after 26 fights and wins over Erickson Lubin, Tim Tszyu, and Thurman, to be seen as the best that the division has to offer.

“I think I’m the best,” he told reporters. “I think they all need to come to me,” he said, of any other champion or contender in the weight class.

His promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, said:

“I guarantee you he will fight any of the champions or former champions.”

Fundora’s options could be limited for the time being, though, considering Vergil Ortiz is embroiled in a legal entanglement with Golden Boy Promotions, and Xander Zayas will defend his two belts against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis in the summer.

This, perhaps, makes Fundora vs Charlo more likely than not to happen next.
