Teddy Atlas is not too sure that Shakur Stevenson really wants to fight Gevonta Davis.
Stevenson has had a busy year, but not in the ring. The young multi-weight world champion first announced his retirement which many people think was due to frustration of not getting the biggest fights.
Speaking to Pro Box TV, however, Atlas laid out the question about Stevenson’s true intentions.
“If ‘Tank’ Davis was presented to him tomorrow would he really take it or would he still be looking for the Navarrete fight where he has an edge and could stay undefeated and kind of walk that rope which is an easier road to walk?
“Do we know that he is what we want him to be, what we think he is, in terms of wanting those fights? Do we really know it? History tells us finally, eventually, but right now, do we know that?”
He then compared Stevenson to other greats in history who went on to have the big fights.
“We found that out about Mayweather who was a really great defensive fighter, fast hands, great, but he wanted those fights. I could go down a list of the guys, – Pernell Whitaker, Sugar Ray Leonard, they wanted those fights.
“We know he has those other things, but does he have that? Does he really have that, does he want to avoid that?”
