Two-division world champion, Shakur Stevenson, has had his say on a how a fantasy fight between Terence Crawford and Floyd Mayweather Jr would play out, following the former’s rise to superstardom status this year.
Crawford, a stablemate of Stevenson, put on a dominant performance in the biggest fight of his career, stopping Errol Spence Jr in their long-awaited undisputed welterweight title bout.
As a result, ‘Bud’ has become widely-regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet and some fans have even suggested that he could have been the man to prevent Floyd Mayweather from reaching his famous and fabled 50-0 record, had they met during their primes.
In an interview with DAZN Boxing, Stevenson admitted that he could not pick a winner between a prime Crawford and a prime Mayweather, despite his close friendship with the new ‘face of boxing’.
“I think that’s interesting, it depends on what Floyd is in the ring. There are different versions of Floyd.
[Bud now versus version of Mayweather that fought Canelo] Man, that’s a hell of a fight. It’s hard to say though because Bud is a southpaw, he can punch with both hands, it would only take one mistake from Floyd. But, Floyd is the king of not making mistakes, so it’s hard to say, I don’t feel like I could sit down here and tell you a real answer.”
Although he will not get the chance to face Mayweather, Crawford seems intent on taking his legacy in the sport one step further, announcing his intention to jump three weight-classes up to 168lbs and face the winner of Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo, in a bid to become a three-division undisputed champion.
