Two weight world champion, Shakur Stevenson, has praised one his rivals as being a ‘special’ fighter that he must face one day.
After winning world titles at featherweight and super-featherweight, Stevenson stepped up to the division that arguably has the most talent in all of boxing – lightweight.
At 135lbs Devin Haney controls all the belts, Lomachenko has proved he can still mix it with the best and Gervonta Davis is one of the most prolific knockout artists in the sport, let alone the weight class.
Stevenson is tipped by many to be a future ruler at lightweight, but he himself has plenty of praise rival ‘Tank’ Davis, calling him ‘the truth’.
Speaking on Say Cheese, Stevenson said the two must meet one day in ‘the biggest fight’.
“I don’t think he [Gervonta Davis] wants to stay away from me, but I know deep down inside he respects me, the same respect I got for him, he respects me.
He knows who he’s dealing with, he knows I’m the truth, I know he’s the truth. That’s the moral to the story, we’re made for the moment, that time when we do fight each other, it’s made to be the biggest fight. I just feel we’re two special fighters that have to meet.”
The 25-year-old’s sole outing in his new weight class was a dominant performance against Shuichiro Yoshino, dispatching of him by stoppage in the sixth round.
Davis is coming off a career best win, forcing Ryan Garcia to stay down past the referee’s count after a textbook body shot.
‘Tank’ is undoubtedly now one of the hottest properties in boxing, with his clash against ‘King Ryan’ reportedly selling north of 1 million pay-per-views. Although belt-less, it’s clear he holds many of the cards at lightweight and is certainly the money fight.
