Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has only tasted defeat twice in his professional career; once to the great Floyd Mayweather over a decade ago and then in a light heavyweight world title fight against Dmitriy Bivol last May.
However, even though beating ‘Canelo’ has proved a difficult task in recent years, two weight world champion Shakur Stevenson claims a stablemate of his would “smoke” the Mexican.
In a recent interview with TMZ, Stevenson was not in the mood for playing down the chances of recently crowned welterweight world champion Terence Crawford.
“In my opinion, he would smoke Canelo. I’m rocking with Bud regardless. I’m rocking with whatever my big brother want to do, the same we he’s going to rock with me.”
There are currently three weight classes between Crawford and undisputed super middleweight champion Alvarez, so a fight between the two stars does not appear particularly likely at this stage.
That said, ‘Bud’ said he would be open to facing ‘Canelo’ at a catchweight of 158lbs – though whether this is a realistic proposition is another matter.
Alvarez is likely in no mood for thinking about fantasy fights at the moment, as his September 30 world title defence against super welterweight kingpin Jermell Charlo draws ever nearer.
The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas will play host to the fight, which will be the first time two reigning undisputed champions have faced off in the four belt era.
As for Crawford, his next move all hangs on whether or not Errol Spence Jr decides to activate a contractual rematch clause after their undisputed world title fight last month.
