Ryan Garcia’s stoppage loss to Gervonta Davis last month has split the opinion of fans, journalists and fighters alike across the boxing world.
Many observers felt that Garcia could have beaten referee Thomas Taylor’s count, after Davis landed a picture perfect left hand to the body in the seventh round.
When asked for his opinion on the matter by FightHype, former three-weight world champion Shane Mosley wasn’t overly critical of ‘King Ry’, although admitted he feels like fighters were slightly tougher during his time as a professional.
“I think fighters from my day and before me, we were built different. I don’t know, I mean if you just get hit with a certain shot, you go down and you stay down? Unless you really can’t get up…”
In a glittering 60 fight career that remarkably spanned from 1993 to 2016, Mosley shared the ring with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Canelo Alvarez and Manny Pacquaio, and was only one of his ten losses came inside the distance.
That in mind, there are probably are few better placed to talk about toughness in boxing.
As for Garcia, he’s confirmed he will move back up to super lightweight for his next outing, with his two fights prior to the ‘Tank’ defeat having been at that weight class.
Although the 24 year old made no excuses for the loss at the T-Mobile Arena, he did concede that he felt slightly weaker than usual due to the 136lbs catchweight, coupled with a 10lbs next day rehydration clause.
Fans can still expect to see Garcia in a host of big fights up at 140lbs, where he will no doubt feel he is operating at full capacity.
