Former two-time welterweight champion, Shawn Porter, has issued a warning ahead of the upcoming super-middleweight showdown between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Jermell Charlo, with one key tip to avoid being ‘broken down’.
Charlo knocked out Brian Carlos Castano in round ten last year to become the undisputed super-welterweight champion.
Now, ‘Iron Man’ faces the biggest test of his career, moving up two weight divisions and facing a fellow undisputed champion, in Canelo Alvarez, who was deemed as the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet by many fans just a few months ago.
However, after three consecutive underwhelming performances against Dmitry Bivol, Gennadiy Golovkin and John Ryder, many fans and fighters believe this to be the optimal time to face the legendary Mexican, who had been undefeated for over eight years before his loss to Bivol.
Although, on his podcast, The Porter Way, Porter warned of the dangers when facing Alvarez, particularly for a man who is not fighting at his natural weight, explaining that Charlo will need to change up the rhythm and pace of the fight, to avoid becoming the subject of Canelo’s fortieth stoppage win.
“Canelo will, especially if you are playing one tune, he finds that tune quickly and he is surgical, he will break you down and he’d would break a lot of people down.”
Canelo will make a third defence of his four 168lb titles on September 30th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with a U.K. broadcaster set to be announced imminently.
The winner will likely secure another mammoth pay day and blockbuster fight, with Terence Crawford announcing his desire to face the winner, providing he defeats Errol Spence Jr in their recently confirmed rematch.
