Shawn Porter has joined pundits and fans of the sport in calling for Conor Benn to be open about his positive doping test, pointing out that any other approach will be ‘digging a ditch for himself.’
The UK boxing scene was thrown into disrepute recently with the news of the young welterweight being found to have a banned substance – clomifene – in his system in the lead up to his fight with Chris Eubank Jr.
Despite the promoters’ consideration to keep the event on, and the willingness of Eubank Jr to fight, it was ultimately postponed with the general feeling being that, should Benn not at least attempt to clear his name, cancellation looms.
Fighter turner analyst, Porter, had his say on the situation to SecondsOut. Like most fans of the sport, ‘Showtime’ wants Benn to come out and be open about the situation.
“It’s getting more and more interesting for Conor Benn. I think the main thing is that he needs to just stand up and be a man, and say everything that he’s done, what he was doing it for and all those different types of things, and then allow the law to handle itself.”
“I think at this point if he hides anymore and more comes out, it just makes him look even worse. He’s kind of digging a ditch for himself.”
The interview with Porter comes after the UK Anti-Doping Agency made their investigation into Benn official. It’s believed that UKAD, alongside the British Boxing Board of Control, will have the support of VADA in their efforts – the doping agency who reported the initial positive result.
Benn’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, spoke to Boxing Social recently to assure fans that more information would be made available in due course. The Matchroom Sport CEO believes that many people will be ‘surprised’ with what they discover.
