After originally being scheduled to fight on September 10th, American Claressa Shields will eventually take on Savannah Marshall in London in two weeks time.
This is clearly one of the biggest fights in the history of women’s boxing after what has been a huge year for the sport and promoter Ben Shalom believes that the victor will become the biggest name of the women’s game.
Speaking to Sky Sports, BOXXER’s Shalom stated how the winner of the undisputed middleweight championship will become so much more than a world champion.
“Whoever wins this fight is, I think, going to be the biggest name in the female sport.
It’s going to have that many eyeballs on it, it’s that important.
Savannah knows that, but she’s not looking past this fight. She’s not looking past October 15. She knows that this is what she’s been training for and, at the end of the day, it’s just a fight. She will get in there as ready as ever and beyond that she knows what’s on offer.”
There will be plenty of naysayers to Shalom’s comments, none more so than both Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, who shared the ring back in April, as well as their respective promoters, Eddie Hearn and Jake Paul.
Nevertheless, the fight goes ahead at the O2 Arena in London on an all-female card, with Mikaela Mayer taking on Alycia Baumgardner for the WBC, WBO, IBF & IBO Super-Featherweight titles, prior to the main event. The event will be shown live on Sky Sports on October 15th.
