Irish middleweight contender Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan (28-2-0, 20 KO’s) is supremely confident that he has the beating of Kazakh sensation Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KO’s) – the current unified champion – should they ever meet in the ring.
O’Sullivan was offered the fight at one point for Golovkin’s return date for May 5th, but ultimately rejected the offer as he believed he was being undervalued at the time.
Instead, the Cork native will be featuring on the undercard of Golovkin’s high-profile rematch with Saul Alvarez, something which was eventually finalised after a protracted period of negotiations between the two camps.
“I have three fights still remaining on my contract with Golden Boy.” O’Sullivan told Sky Sports.
“They promised me after my last fight that I would be on the September undercard. At the moment there’s no talks of opponent, but I expect a top undercard bout.”
The Cork fighter also reports that Golden Boy have promised him a showdown with the eventual winner, which he hopes will be Golovkin.
“All my focus now is on September and then getting the winner.” he continued.
“Canelo would be the bigger fight financially, but I’ve always wanted to face ‘GGG’. That’s my dream fight, and I believe I can beat him and take his ‘0’.”
After falling short in fights against Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Junior respectively, O’Sullivan reinvigorated his world title aspirations last December with a fifth round stoppage of Antoine Douglas in Montreal.
He would then go on to score a third round stoppage of unheralded Berlin Abreu in May, in what was deemed as little more than a stay-busy fight for the quirky Irish clubber.
