The boxing world has rightly bestowed praise upon Terence Crawford for his sublime performance to claim the undisputed welterweight world championship this past weekend at the T-Mobile Arena.
But what about Errol Spence, the man who was on the receiving end of a brutal beating from the best fighter of this generation?
Spence’s body had been through the ringer before his unraveling against Crawford, mainly due to a horrific car accident back in 2018 and a detached retina he suffered in training camp for a fight against Manny Pacquiao.
And esteemed sports broadcaster Stephen A Smith has now claimed that, due to those factors and more, Spence should consider hanging up the gloves.
“It’s rare in the day that I see a fighter get beat up in the way that I saw Errol Spence get beat up.”
“It was so bad to me, taking into account the car accident he’s had, the concussions and the detached retina he suffered. He should consider retirement after what happened to him on Saturday night.”
“You need to crystallise the kind of punishment Errol Spence endured.”
It remains unclear as of yet whether Spence will heed Smith’s advice, activate a contractual rematch clause or perhaps move up in weight and pursue fights against alternative opponents.
At the post fight press conference, he made clear his desire to take on ‘Bud’ again, though would much prefer the contest takes place up in weight at super welterweight.
However, after some time reflecting and discussing things with those closest to him, he may decide this perhaps is not the best decision.
