Former IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards picked up a first career defeat and lost his world title in his last bout, and now, ‘Showtime’ is set to return to the ring against a former world champion, but that didn’t stop Edwards labelling the bout as an ‘easy one.’
Edwards travelled stateside and lost to pound-for-pound superstar Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez in December, but put in a spirited effort against his fellow 112lb champion in one of the highest profile flyweight fights in recent memory, earning the respect of fans in the USA.
Matchroom Boxing have revealed that Sunny has signed a new promotional agreement and confirmed that he has also put pen to paper on a deal to fight Adrian Curiel (24-5-1).
Surprisingly, the bout will take place on the undercard of ‘Bam’s’ next outing in Arizona, where Edwards’ former opponent will fight Juan Estrada for the WBC super-flyweight title.
Following the announcement, Matchroom posted a clip of Sunny signing the contract, where he and Eddie Hearn had differing opinions on the difficulties of facing Curiel.

Edwards: “Do you think it is [a] hard [fight]?
Hearn: “There is going to be 12,000 Mexicans there. You’ve just lost and you’re coming back to fight a former world champion, a Mexican, in front of 12,000 Mexicans.”
Edwards: “But I think that I have got a few Mexican fans now.”
Hearn: “I think that you have got a few in Arizona. I love that that you’re taking the fight, I think that it is a great fight for you.”
Edwards: “I thought that it was quite an easy gimme back, to be honest.”
Curiel famously knocked out Sivenathi Nontshinga back in November to claim the IBF light-flyweight title, but he lost the strap just three months later in their rematch.
‘Gatito’ will now move up in weight to face Sunny in the flyweight division on the Rodriguez-Estrada card on June 29th
