Former trainer turned pundit Teddy Atlas has been breaking down the upcoming fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Jaime Munguia.
This contest took a while to finalise amidst plenty of talk that Canelo might fight David Benavidez. Although many still want to see the Mexican defend his undisputed super middleweight titles against Benavidez, a fight with his fellow Mexican Munguia is no easy route.
The pair have a common recent opponent in Brit John Ryder, whom Canelo beat over 12 rounds and knocked down once, while the unbeaten Munguia, whose record sits at 43 and 0, took him apart in a quicker fashion and stopped him in the mid-rounds.
Speaking to Pro Box TV, Atlas suggested Munguia will need to have worked on his defence if he has a chance.
“The key is to make those changes in the gym. That’s the thing. You can make those adjustments in the corner but if you haven’t taught the core things, the most important things that can be detrimental to your fighter, defence for Munguia.
“If that hasn’t been improved on, if that hasn’t been set in stone in the gym, you know what, you ain’t gunna make those adjustments in the ring. What are you going to say? Move your head? Slip the right hand? That should have been taught. If that hasn’t been taught already, it’s too late.”
