Teddy Atlas has come down hard on those involved in what he perceives to have been boxing’s latest ‘robbery’ and claimed that it was clear to him that one fighter clearly won despite not getting the decision.
Boxing will always be plagued by these high-profile scorecard mishaps. In the past, there have been baffling decisions that have seen many apparent losers be given victory.
Most famously in recent times that includes Jack Catterall not getting the nod against Josh Taylor, and this weekend it was Natasha Jonas against Mikaela Mayer.
One person who disagreed with the judgment was Atlas, who expressed his dismay on The Fight.
“BS. I’m not holding myself back. They stole this fight. It was a good fight, a close fight, a competing fight. But they stole it. They robbed Mayer, she had to go to hostile territory and go up several weight classes to get this shot.”
He repeated again his claim that the American was ‘robbed’ of her chance to win the IBF world title.
“She got robbed. Competitive good fight yes, no doubt. Some close rounds, but if you have confident, honest judges it should have gone one way, to [Mayer]. This fight was one of the easier ones to judge.
“One of them was a puncher, the person putting the pressure on, and the other was a boxer. If you knew and cared about what you were watching you could have easily picked a winner. It was a fight that was easy to judge.”
