Terence Crawford has weighed in on the calls for Errol Spence Jr to retire following their undisputed welterweight world title fight last month.
So one sided was the beating Crawford put upon Spence on route to a ninth round stoppage, that some observers have stated that the Texan should retire for the good of his long term health.
On a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Crawford said he disagrees with that view, however he does think ‘The Truth’ should take “a little time off.”
“I don’t think he [Spence] should retire. I think he should take a little time off, get his mind right, then get back in the ring and get focused.
I’ve never taken a loss in the professional rankings, but I know how that can affect you mentally. Being at this high level and losing the way he lost, you start questioning yourself – am I getting old? am I slipping? You start asking yourself questions that you’ve got to answer.
I would tell him that he’s a great fighter and to take a little time off. Come back, do it again but don’t rush.”
There has been no official word on what Spence’s next move will be at the time of writing, though he did say at the post fight press conference he intends to activate a contractual rematch clause and take on ‘Bud’ again.
Though Crawford’s performance was undoubtedly elite, some pundits believe it was not the best version of Spence at the T-Mobile Arena that night, citing a tough weight cut and his life threatening car accident back in 2018 as possible contributing factors.
