Two-weight undisputed champion Terence Crawford has suggested the next opponent for Edgar Berlanga, stating that his proposed fighter will ‘smash him.’
Berlanga comprehensively beat Padraig McCrory in Orlando, Florida last Saturday, and now looks towards future fights in the super middleweight division, with a potential Mexico vs Puerto Rico clash against pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez on the cards.
But Crawford has gone in a different direction with his pick, suggesting that Berlanga should face his stablemate Steven Nelson.
Nelson is unbeaten at 19-0, with 15 of those wins coming by knockout, and ‘Bud’ feels it would be a straightforward win for his man when discussing the potential fight on X.
“@EdgarBerlangaJr coo peoples but I think ma brother @SoColdNelson will smash him. It will be a good fight for both guys too.”
Nelson was last in action in July, earning a unanimous decision win over Rowdy Legend Montgomery, but is still yet to record a major win in his career thus far.
With that in mind, it appears Berlanga has his eyes set on world titles, with the win over McCrory confirmed to make him the mandatory challenger with the WBA.
Canelo currently holds all four belts, which he aims to defend in his next fight in May – with Berlanga and fellow unbeaten fighter Jaime Munguia believed to be the to frontrunners for a showdown on DAZN, after it was reported that Canelo split with PBC this week.
