Last week Tony Bellew announced that he is officially in talks with arguably the pound for pound number one boxer in the world, Andre Ward. If all goes according to plan, they might even fight by end of the year.
To the surprise of many, it was Ward who made the first call. The American expressed his interests to go up in weight after defeating fellow light heavyweight great Sergey Kovalev twice.
“It’s come to light this week that Andre Ward wants to do business, so listen I’m happy to oblige. He made the call, Eddie picked up, he comes to me. If he wants to dance, I can do it,” said Bellew to Sky Sports.
Bellew has been weighing different options at heavyweight but a fight against Ward could possibly mean a drop back down to cruiserweight. Because that’s what Bellew wants.
“With all due respect, he’s an amazing fighter, one of the pound-for-pound best in the world. But I ain’t no light-heavyweight. He’s saying he likes the heavyweights, I’m saying I’ll do cruiserweight,” stated ‘The Bomber’.
That being said, Bellew is still keeping his options open and a fight against the American is by no means a done deal just yet.
“I’m going to be honest, I’ve got quite a few options in front of me. We’ll see.”
