Tony Bellew has weighed in with his thoughts on a potential rematch between Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte this summer.
Whyte was working as part of the broadcast team for Joshua’s successful comeback fight against Jermaine Franklin this past weekend, and looks to be an earlier frontrunner for his old rival’s next opponent.
When asked about the fight on The DAZN Boxing Show, Bellew explained that he felt ‘AJ’ would be in a “can’t win” situation if he was to fight Whyte next.
“I think it’s a big, domestic grudge match. But I think ‘AJ’ is in a no-win position when he goes into that fight, he can’t win.”
“Unless he blows him away in two rounds, which is very hard to do because Dillian Whyte is a problem for anyone in the world apart from Tyson Fury!”
“For ‘AJ’ now, if he takes on Dillian, it would take a brutal and ruthless performance for him to come out shining.”
Joshua and Whyte are certainly no strangers to one another, having locked horns in both the amateur and professional ranks, with the score currently stood at one win a piece.
‘The Bodysnatcher’ got the better of Joshua in the unpaid ranks, before Joshua got his own back in a memorable British heavyweight title fight back in 2015, defeating Whyte with a stunning sixth round knockout.
Though ‘AJ’ was victorious via a wide unanimous decision against Franklin, it was not the statement performance his backers would have hoped for and many were left with more questions than answers about what he has to left offer the heavyweight division.
There had been talk before the fight that talks with Tyson Fury’s representatives could be revisited, however promoter Eddie Hearn has since said he’d prefer Joshua have at least one more fight under new coach Derrick James first.
