A super middleweight clash between Carl Froch and Joe Calzaghe is one of the most talked about domestic fights that never materialised, as the pair are regarded as two of Britain’s finest ever fighters.
And Tony Bellew has weighed in with his prediction for the hypothetical match up – right to Froch’s face.
Whilst appearing on the Nottingham man’s YouTube Channel, Bellew frankly told him that he feels a prime Calzaghe would have been too much for him.
“I don’t think you beat him, mate. As great as you were, I don’t think you beat him. He’s a nightmare for anyone. But no one would outclass you. You faced the best super middleweight of your era in Andre Ward, and you weren’t out classed.”
“But Joe would be head and shoulders above anyone. With that workmate, how do you beat him? You’d be capable of knocking him out. He throws that many and you’ll always know you have been in a fight.”
Fresh talk about Froch vs Calzaghe sprung up again over the summer after promoter Frank Warren accused Froch of ducking the Welshman.
Froch was the mandatory challenger for Calzaghe’s WBC super middleweight belt back in 2008, however the latter elected to move up to light heavyweight for a more lucrative pay day against American star Bernard Hopkins.
‘The Cobra,’ who was known best for his toughness and willingness to find anyone at any time, has unsurprisingly since denied Warren claims.
Though both men are long retired from boxing, Froch vs Calzaghe is a match up still heavily debated by British fight fans on a regular basis.
Froch has called for an exhibition bout against “The Pride of Wales” in recent years but, perhaps thankfully, this looks unlikely to ever happen. He also admits that it would quickly descend into a real fight.
