Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis takes on Frank Martin tomorrow night in a huge battle for the WBA lightweight title, and now former world champion Tony Bellew has given an in-depth prediction for the fight.
Davis takes on Martin at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, in what will be the 100th boxing event to take place at the iconic venue, and will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime PPV.
Both Davis and Martin are undefeated heading into the bout, and while ‘Tank’ is the favourite, many onlookers are predicting that it could be a much closer fight than anticipated.
Former WBC cruiserweight champion Bellew is the latest to weigh in on the showdown, breaking down the contest whilst speaking to DAZN, beginning with his analysis of Davis.
“Gervonta Davis is one of boxing’s biggest attractions and I’m looking forward to seeing the heavy-handed star back in action this weekend.
“Davis was always going to be a big name because he’s a huge puncher and he’s got a nasty streak to the way he fights.
“His association with Floyd Mayweather helped him get to that position a lot quicker, but I knew from watching him early in his career that he was eventually going to be one of the best fighters the sport has to offer.
“After he stopped Ryan Garcia last year, Davis’ career has gone to another level as he was able to take part in a marquee fight and grab himself a big win.
“Being a puncher who usually blows his opponents away makes it hard to back against Davis, but I think this fight could be harder than people think.”
Bellew then went on to discuss the attributes of Martin, and feels his coaching team could be a key factor in the fight.
“Martin is a quality operator with a solid pedigree and if Davis isn’t at his best, this could be a long night for him.
“Martin is trained by Derrick James and when you’ve got someone like that in your corner, you will always believe you have a chance.
“Martin is hungry for this fight, but he could be in for a very harsh realisation when the first bell goes.”
Despite being impressed with Martin, ultimately Bellew felt that he had to go with ‘Tank’ in the fight.
“It’s too hard to back against Davis as he’s the fighter with the proven class, but he’s going to have to be at 100%, because I really like Martin.
“‘Tank’ can get himself a late stoppage win but don’t be surprised if he’s behind on the scorecards when that moment comes.”
All will be revealed when Davis and Martin enter the ring on Saturday evening.
