Former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew has offered his opinion on the heavily criticized but highly profitable upcoming showdown between heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson and YouTuber-turned boxer Jake Paul.
This month it was confirmed that Jake Paul would take on one of the biggest names in the history of boxing, as he signed to fight ‘Iron’ Mike, after two successive first-round knockout wins over Andre August and Ryan Bourland respectively.
However, the major concerns are in regards to whether the bout will be a professional one or not, almost two decades after the final contest of Tyson’s career, a stoppage defeat to Ireland’s Kevin McBride.
As many fans question the morality of the card, almost all will understand why the pair have taken the fight with the purses rumoured to be monumental, but the necessity of professional rules and jeopardy remains a hot topic.
Tony Bellew admitted that he is worried ahead of the event.
“I am worried about it personally but listen, you don’t know what’s been agreed between the two. It’s frightening that Mike Tyson is going back into a boxing ring against somebody who is more than 30 years older than him. It’s just a bit nuts.”
“I’m hoping that the fight is a bit of a circus and a bit scripted because I wouldn’t want to see Mike get hurt in any way shape or form. Let’s see what happens. He is going to be getting paid an awful lot of money and nobody has the right to stop him from doing that.”
Bellew will see if his prediction is correct when Paul-Tyson takes place on July 20th in a one-of-a-kind card that will be available to watch on Netflix.
