Saul Canelo Alvarez has recently been hit with his punishment for testing positive for Clenbuterol. The Mexican 2-weight world champion tested positive for the substance twice on February 17 and February 20th.
Canelo eventually withdrew from his May 5th showdown with Golovkin before the Nevada State Athletic Commission moved to suspend the popular PPV attraction until the last quarter of 2018.
Many have raised their eyebrows at the leniency in the punishment that was served to Alvarez, ‘The Bomber’ Tony Bellew has now made his disapproval of the verdict public.
“It’s not a deterrent,” Bellew said when asked about Canelo’s six-month ban.
Bellew argued there needs to more transparency from those administering the testing.
“I need these organisations Wada, Vada, Ukad or whatever they are called to release all the details.”
Bellew also added that he doesn’t believe changes will be made until a professional fighter loses his or her life to a steroid user.
“If Canelo has genuinely taken drugs then ban him but it genuinely won’t change until – and I am sorry to say it – but it until somebody dies at the hands of someone on steroids.”
“When that happens you will see the sport change but until that defining moment, you will not see it.”
“Six months, what’s the point? No fine? Are you f****** messing me about?”
“When someone dies – and touch wood it isn’t me – they will start banning people for life and that will send a message.”
Elsewhere, Bellew is honing in on his May 5th rematch date with David Haye and he shared he is feeling rather agitated as he heads down the final stretch of his fight camp.
“It’s been long and hard and the closer the fight is, I know how serious it gets,” he said. “I’ve been at it for three months now, I’m at week 12 of a 14-week camp. I’m pissed off and I want to fight the world.
“I’m in my car and little things can push me. I dread to think what would happen if someone confronted me today.”
Furthermore, Bellew added that he acknowledges his rival will be fired up to prove a point in their rematch.
“I’ve had it a few times in this camp where I’ve just thought ‘what am I doing here?’ But I know what Haye’s bringing. He has a lot of hatred and anger in him towards me and I’m dealing with a wounded animal.”
