A former trainer of Tyson Fury’s has been assessing his upcoming undisputed fight with Oleksandr Usyk and reckons ‘it could be a difficult fight for him.’
There are a number of question marks over Fury right now. His last showing against Francis Ngannou had many people including his own father worried that he might be starting to show signs of decline.
He also got cut late in camp meaning that the original fight date of February 17 had to be pushed back to May 18 so that he had time to heal and that has got people worried that Fury may struggle to stay motivated.
Usyk meanwhile is coming off two great back-to-back wins over Anthony Joshua and a solid second defence of his WBA, WBO and IBF titles against Daniel Dubois.
Speaking to Full Circle, Fury’s former coach Ben Davison, who now coaches Anthony Joshua, had his say.
“Yeh it’s massive, an unbelievable fight. In terms of their character it’s so mad as they’re so opposite yet so similar. I’m intrigued, even when it comes to fight week regarding what both fighters have to say and whether that’ll show us anything about how each fighter might approach the fight.
“A lot of people say Tyson’s size (is the key to victory), but it’s all about whether Tyson is able to impose his size. If he goes about the fight the wrong way it could be difficult for him to capitalise on his size. I think the misconception with Usyk is that he’s some back foot fighter who runs around the ring, when he’s actually very aggressive.
“The clinch will be an interesting situation because Usyk is very good technically in the clinch, but there is such a size difference that you just don’t know. Tyson is actually very good in the clinch as well, and where Usyk maybe edges the technical aspect in the clinch, Fury has the size.
“It’ll be interesting to see how the referee allows it to play out, or will he allow it to play out. Someone like Tyson, who’s so versatile, you can’t be sure how he’s going to approach the fight.”
