In the latest boxing news today, the former heavyweight boxing champion, Andy Ruiz Jr., told Hard Rock Bet he’d “love to fight” Tyson Fury, and even received a message recently from Britain’s Brobdingnagian boxer about fighting him next.
“Tyson Fury actually messaged me asking what I thought about fighting him, but everybody was saying that’s too dangerous for him right now, so I’m pretty sure that’s why he picked [Arslanbek] Makhmudov” instead, he said.
The decision win over Makhmudov was a much-needed one for Fury, considering he hadn’t won a fight for years, having retired, again, following back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury will seemingly fight Anthony Joshua later this year but could box another warm-up, just like AJ himself will when he fights Kristian Prenga on July 25.
One man he could fight is Ruiz, who seemingly already has a masterplan to triumph.
“The speed, the pressure, and throwing combinations,” he said. “You know, the head moves but the body stays there, so all my punches are going to be there in his chest, stomach, head, everywhere.”
“If I fought him (Fury) I think I’d be way too much. Although a lot of people are saying that Fury would box me around, people have to remember that they haven’t seen me when I fight really good people. I come out like a beast, especially when I’m in shape.”
When asked who the most overrated heavyweight fighter is, Ruiz did not hold back.
“I’m gonna say Tyson Fury because they hype him up so much but to me I don’t even think he’s a crazy fighter.
“Yes, he’s done a lot in the sport. But I feel like the only person that he really beat up that was good was [Deontay] Wilder. So yeah, I’m gonna say Tyson Fury.”
Elsewhere, there is movement regarding the developing situation Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao find themselves in. Netflix released statements early this year indicating they’d stream the long-awaited rematch to its global audience.
Mayweather, though, complicated the picture when he said it wouldn’t take place at the planned venue, The Sphere, and instead head to MGM Grand Garden Arena — the same site as the first fight in 2015. The rematch, which comes 11 years later, could be late September, per Boxing Scene.
