Tyson Fury has once again changed his mind about fighting unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and has now claimed the fight is ‘irrelevant’.
Fury has spoken in the latest media round in the build-up to his fight with Francis Ngannou. It takes place on October 28 in Riyadh and will be the former MMA fighter’s first-ever professional boxing match.
It is not a fight many wanted to see before it was announced but has sure generated plenty of headlines in the build-up with some former world champions warning Fury of the risks of taking on such a big hitter.
Of much more interest would be a huge coming together with Usyk, the former undisputed cruiserweight king turned WBO, WBA and IBF heavyweight title holder who has seen off the challenges of Derek Chisora, Anthony Joshua – twice – and Daniel Dubois in the marquee division.
Speaking to IFL TV, Fury was asked why the fight with Usyk hasn’t happened.
“Because he’s a s**t house. And he got beat by Daniel Dubois anyway. It’s irrelevant now. 100% he got knocked out by a body shot. He quit there. That’s a quitter for you.”
Fury then said he has “no interest” in facing the Ukrainian.
“He’s a welterweight, Shawn Porter, but he did beat him at welterweight yeh, 75 kilos. I’ve got no interest in him at all. First stop Francis Ngannou, second stop bank.”
To call what would be a battle for the undisputed crown ‘irrelevant’ is hard to swallow for fight fans who will once again be disappointed that this match-up – one of the best in world boxing – is seemingly nowhere near being made.
