Even before both fighters had left the ring following the historic undisputed fight his past week the talk of a rematch had begun but Tyson Fury’s promoter has now raised doubts over whether to not there will be a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
The first fight to crown a four-belt king this century lived up to all the expectation out in Saudi Arabia this past weekend. It was a tight and technical contest over the full 12 rounds that included a standing count for Fury and plenty of close back and forth.
The result ended up being a split-decision win for Usyk who remains undefeated and in just 22 professional fights has managed to clean up all the belts in both the cruiserweight and the heavyweight divisions.
He was asked immediately following the conclusion of the bout if he was ready for a rematch to which he replied yes, and Fury also said he was keen to do it again.
However, within a few hours, Frank Warren seemed less certain his man ‘The Gypsy King’ would in fact be up for the rematch.
Speaking to Seconds Out he asked what might be going through Fury’s mind regarding his future.
“I said you’ve been away from your family since last December, two back to back training camps, no fights in between, it’s a long time to be away, you’ve not got to make any decisions about anything.
“It’s contracted, if you want to go through with it go through with it, who’s to question Tyson about what he does in the ring, it’s his voice, he’s the guy who is taking the lumps and that’s how it is.
“Course there are big fights out there, because he comes to fight, he’s a great fighter, this was his first defeat, but it would be his choice. When I speak to him I’m not even going to try and influence him.”
He was asked what the smart moves are for Fury.
“He’s a wealthy guy, he fights for big purse that improves his bank balance. Can he spend the money he’s got? No, he can’t, so it’s his choice, what does he want to do, what does his wife want to do? There is zero pressure.”
Given how much both men have already accomplished in the sport, and with them now both in their mid to late thirties, it would be understandable if one or both decided to never fight again.
The likes of Anthony Joshua who was ringside on the night, will be hoping that is not the case, especially when it comes to Fury who he has long wanted to share a ring with.
