Outspoken heavyweight, Tyson Fury, dismissed Liverpool’s Tony Bellew as a possible opponent this week after making a successful comeback against limited import Sefer Seferi.
“Bomber” Bellew retired David Haye by knocking out the Londoner in round five of their rematch last month. Since then, he’s been lobbying for the Fury fight which appears to have fallen on deaf ears.
Speaking to Boxing Social this week, the former unified champion said: “I’m not really interested in Tony Bellew at all, he doesn’t have any heavyweight titles. He doesn’t have anything I want. I can’t stand him. I’m not interested.
“They had their option to do the fight and they let themselves down, they didn’t do it. So we won’t be going there. He can make as much noise as he wants.
“Tony Bellew’s getting nothing apart from a slap in the face when I see him for being cheeky. We’ll see how tough he is when I punch him in the mouth.”
The Lineal heavyweight champion’s career is being rebuilt brick by brick after overcoming a battle with depression.
Helping with the reconstruction is new head trainer Ben Davison. After striking up a friendship with the unknown tactician, Fury has set out on the comeback trail with new found motivation.
Earlier this month, the unbeaten switch-hitter was back to winning ways in his hometown of Manchester. His inferior opponent, Sefer Seferi, retired after four forgettable rounds in a mismatch that taught us precious little about Fury’s ability to return to the top.
The 29-year-old’s second assignment since dethroning Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 is slated for August 18 at Belfast’s Windsor Park on Carl Frampton’s undercard.
Here’s hoping for fewer shots to be thrown in the crowd, and a few more thrown in anger in the ring from the giant with skills to burn.
