SugarHill Steward has established himself as one of boxing’s greatest active trainers since he partnered up with Tyson Fury in preparation for the rematch between Deontay Wilder and ‘The Gypsy King.’ Now, the nephew of the legendary Emmanuel Steward will hope to guide one of the heavyweight division’s greatest prospects towards a world title.
Steward linked up with Fury after the Brit left Ben Davison in December 2019 in order to adopt the more aggressive ‘Kronk’ approach in his rematch with Wilder.
The tactical move worked perfectly as Fury put in a legendary performance to regain his world championship status with a famous knockout win and then repeated the feat in a classic encounter in their trilogy bout.
Since working with Fury, Steward has also trained two other Briton’s, teaming up with budding superstar Ben Whittaker, as well as former cruiserweight world champion Lawrence Okolie – who has since left Steward in favour of a switch to Joe Gallagher.
Fury suffered his first career defeat in his most recent outing, losing to Oleksandr Usyk in a bid for the undisputed heavyweight title but quickly activating his rematch-clause in an attempt to avenge the loss.
However, after that contest, the only fight that appears to remain for Fury is the all-British showdown against Anthony Joshua, meaning there is likely no more than three remaining contests for Fury at the peak of the sport.
Fury himself has labelled sparring partner Jared Anderson as the future of the division and admitted that he is the man to take his spot, with the American currently undefeated in his 17 fights today, with 15 wins by way of knockout thus far.
Now, ‘The Real Big Baby’ will follow in the footsteps, appointing Steward as his lead trainer at the surprise request of Saudi boxing catalyst Turki Al-Alshikh, who revealed the move on his social media.
“I want to thank Jared Anderson for taking my advice and seeking out coach and trainer SugarHill [Steward] to train him for his upcoming fight.”
The move means that Anderson will leave his former USA Boxing national coach Kay Koroma, as well as Darrie Riley – the man who originally taught him how to box, ahead of his toughest fight to date.
Anderson will appear with SugarHill Steward in his corner for the first time when he takes on an arguable bogeyman in the division in Martin Bakole, on one of the strongest cards to ever take place in the United States as Al-Alshikh makes his first foray into the U.S. market with the blockbuster Israil Madrimov vs. Terence Crawford bill.
Accompanying Madrimov-Crawford and Anderson-Bakole on the card will be former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr., as well as two WBA world title fights featuring David Morrell and Radivoje Kalajdzic at light-heavyweight and Isaac Cruz and Jose Valenzuela at super-lightweight, whilst highly-rated Andy Cruz continues his fast start to life as a professional in a tough fourth bout.
