Tyson Fury’s new trainer Ben Davison ruled out a clash with Liverpool’s Tony Bellew this week.
Davison, who propelled himself into the limelight by taking the reins of Fury’s preparations, told Boxing Social:
“Tony Bellew [is a]good fighter but he doesn’t really bring anything that we’re after. We know where we’re looking to go and unfortunately Tony Bellew is not really on them tracks, just because he’s not got anything that we’re looking for. It’s also very complicated with BT and Sky.”
Promoter Frank Warren, in partnership with BT, captured the 29-year-old giant’s signature earlier this year. Under Frank, Fury completed a successful comeback against Sefer Seferi at the Manchester Arena in a one-sided exhibition. Though widely criticised, Davison saw value in the mismatch. He said:
“When you look where Tyson’s come from and the journey he has been on, you can replicate boxing in the gym but you can’t replicate the mental and emotional side of it. And I think that’s a hurdle that he needed to overcome.
That was a good starting point for him to come out in front of all of those fans. His concentration wasn’t there, but for me, [given] Tyson’s ability, he needs to be mentally stimulated and he needs to be aroused by the opponent to see the best of him.
My only worry is the less [quality] of the opponent the less you’re going to see of Tyson. I say it all the time in the gym. We bring in world-class sparring and world-class fighters, and as soon as he knows he’s got their number he can get bored due to the amount of ability he’s got.”
The former unified heavyweight champion will be out again on Carl Frampton’s undercard at Belfast’s Windsor Park in two month’s time, and the young trainer with a steely confidence is expecting an improved showing from his charge.
“I’ll be looking for an exceptional performance and nothing less come August 18th,” he concluded.
The stacked night of boxing is live and exclusive on BT Sport (UK).
