Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are still far away from a deal. The recent announcement of Canelo Alvarez fighting Gennady Golovkin certainly doesn’t help. Earlier this week White said a potential date, September 16th, was lost to Canelo and ‘Triple G’. This has stalled the talks between Mayweather and McGregor. Here’s what White had to say on Fox Sports ‘The Herd.’
“I’m not hinting that it’s getting close. I knew this was going to be a nightmare to get done. If it can even be done. We’ll find out. Obviously both guys want to fight each other, but you know, what’s the deal? Can the deal be done? That’s the question. Listen, when people are interested in fights, it’s good for everybody…. We can all co-exist. And the reason they [Canelo-GGG] got my date is because I couldn’t get my deal done on time. So they got the date. I didn’t get the deal done fast enough [for Mayweather-McGregor], so I lose the date. That’s how it works,” White said.
The back and forth between both sides has taken a toll on the UFC President. If negotiations won’t develop in time, White is willing to leave the table.
“It’s not even Mayweather. It is definitely both sides and not just Mayweather, it’s both sides of this thing are going to be hard to get done. And absolutely, there’s going to be a point where I’m done. This isn’t what I do, this isn’t my business, and I’m definitely going to walk away,” told White.
White also gave his opinion on the big fight between Alvarez and Golovkin.
“You know what, boxing’s been dying for 20 years. Every time when you think boxing’s dead, it bounces right back with a great fight. The heavyweight fight [Anthony Joshua vs. Wladimir Klitschko] was awesome. Canelo-Chavez, not a good fight but got a lot of… lot of people were interested in watching that fight. And that fight built Triple G vs. Canelo, it really did. Canelo looked fantastic, Triple G knocks everybody out. People are excited now to see that fight. I don’t ever hate on boxing. I’ve hated on a lot of the mistakes that they’ve made, but I love it, man.”
