The stage was set for the much talked about comeback of Carl Frampton. He was excited and happy, but most of all ready to fight in Belfast once again on July 29th.
Sadly disturbing news surfaced before fight night. “The Jackal” failed to make weight and came a pound over the featherweight limit thus eliminating the WBC title eliminator factor for Frampton. Then word got out that challenger Andres Gutierrez fell in the shower and sustained damage to his teeth and chin. The Mexican was unable to take part in the fight and this lead to the cancellation of the whole event with less than 24 hours notice.
“We appreciate the patience of all ticket holders who can retain their tickets pending confirmation of a rescheduled fight. For anyone wishing to arrange a refund, further details will be released early next week,” said a joint statement released by Cyclone Promotions and SSE Arena.
A new date is being scheduled for the fight.
Meanwhile, Frampton did comment on missing weight and the cancellation.
“It was an unfortunate accident. I wanted to fight, I was busting to come back and fight in Belfast, you just can’t make this sort of stuff up. It’s very very unfortunate. There’s bigger featherweights in the world than me and they can make it, but I feel like I’m crammed into this division as well, the weight wasn’t coming off as it normally would. But if people did see the sacrifices I’ve been making in camp, and saw what I tried to get to that nine stone limit, I would hope they would understand,” said Frampton according to boxingscene.com
