Matchroom promoter, Eddie Hearn, has provided an update on a potential fight between Katie Taylor and Chantelle Cameron after Amanda Serrano pulled out of a rematch with the former due to an injury.
Taylor and Serrano shared the ring in May last year in what turned out to be one of the greatest fights in the history of women’s boxing, leaving the audience clamouring for more.
Those fans seemed to have gotten their wish when Taylor-Serrano II was announced as Taylor’s homecoming fight, however Serrano has since pulled out, after picking up an injury in her fight against Erika Cruz.
Many fans anticipated that the fight would simply be postponed until Taylor uncharacteristically called out Chantelle Cameron, the undisputed super-lightweight champion, to step in and replace Serrano for the scheduled date of May 20.
In an interview with Matchroom Boxing, Hearn supplied further details on the rumoured bout.
“She [Cameron] is undisputed at 140lbs, it is a tremendous fight and Katie Taylor, looking at the Amanda Serrano injury, said ‘I want to fight May 20th’.
We have planned that homecoming, the 3 Arena is available, Chantelle came straight back and said ‘yeah, we want to do it’. We have got to agree the money on both sides, but we are not a million miles away.”
“I think it could be a tougher fight than Amanda Serrano, Chantelle is the bigger fighter, she is very aggressive, she punches very hard, and she has believed for a long time that she wins that fight.”
“I believe that there is a good chance that we could get Taylor-Cameron over the line next week.”
One positive that could come out of the postponement of Taylor-Serrano II is the possibility and hope of seeing the rematch at Croke Park, which appeared to diminish in recent months, at least for the May timeframe.
However, the rematch would undeniably be less captivating if Chantelle Cameron were to put an end to the Irish legend’s undefeated run in the sport.
