UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman says the whole world would watch a fight between himself and Canelo Alvarez.
The 35-year-old defends his title against Britain’s Leon Edwards inside the Octagon on August 20 but is still aiming for a crossover event with Alvarez.
The Mexican has his own fight to contend with first on September 17 when the Undisputed Super Middleweight champion faces Gennadiy Golovkin for a third time.
Canelo has already described Usman’s attempts to goad him into a fight as nothing more than an excuse for a big pay day.
But in an interview with TMZ the Nigerian-American says that Canelo’s next fight date was meant to for them.
“That’s supposed to be our date.”
“That was supposed to be my date with Canelo but of course he found someone else to dance with. GGG, the trilogy, that’s an incredible fight. That’s definitely something I’m paying attention to and watching.”
Usman vs Canelo – “Crazier things happen“
“Let’s be honest in this era right now he’s one of the best to do it. It’s never been done, pound-for-pound versus pound-for-pound and significantly close in weight classes to be able to do it. Why not?”
“I know a lot of people hate on it [but] there’s been crazier things happen and that has happened. And I don’t think there’s going to be anyone in the world who’s not watching that fight. Even though they want to hate on it but when you get that fight announced everyone will be watching that fight.”
