Frank Smith has weighed in on the drawn out negotiation process for a potential undisputed heavyweight world title fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.
Most fans are frustrated that a deal to finalise the fight for April 29th at Wembley now seems dead in the water.
In a recent interview with Pro Boxing Fans, Smith said he felt popular support was with the Ukrainian as a result of Fury’s shenanigans.
“I think Usyk has won the public vote off all the back of all this, in my opinion.”
It now appears the historic clash will not be happening next month, after Usyk’s manager, Eglis Klimas, stated the following last night.
“No matter how much Usyk was compromised, he was pushed for more.”
Klimas went on to explain that Usyk would now look to fulfil one of his mandatory obligations in the summer, potentially in the shape of WBA regular champion Daniel Dubois.
Despite the concerning comments from Klimas, Fury’s promoter Frank Warren appeared on Talksport this morning and remarkably claimed that the fight was NOT yet dead in the water.
The Queensberry boss explained he had convinced ‘The Gypsy King’ to backtrack on the potential removal of a rematch clause, but issues have emerged regarding the purse split of a second fight.
“We want the fight, why can’t it be overcome?”
Boxing fans across the globe – who could certainly be forgiven for being a touch confused about the current state of play – will live in hope that talks for the first undisputed heavyweight world title fight in over two decades can somehow be salvaged.
