The manager of Oleksandr Usyk, Egis Klimas, believes an announcement for their fight with Tyson Fury is imminent.
The Ukrainian heavyweight champion is set to put his WBO, WBO and IBF titles on the line against Fury’s WBC in order to crown one champion in the division for the first time in two decades.
Despite all involved being onboard and actively working towards staging the event, fans had expected a solid date announcement by now. The targeted date has now moved to Spring with April most likely.
Klimas told Boxing Social that he believes it’s the biggest fight in the history of the sport, and that an announcement may come within seven days.
“I cannot comment much about it because we’re still in [talks]. The fight is not done yet, we’re just working on it and hopefully in a week or so we can bring to the fans the big announcements.”
“Yes, correct, Saudi is on the map, as well as London … I’m very proud to be part of it because not very often you’re going to get undisputed, especially in heavyweight division. I think it’s the biggest fight in history.”
His fighter has upped the online taunts of late, branding Fury ‘belly’ and claiming that he’s only interested in money. Fury, despite his usual penchant for trash talk, has been the quieter of the two.
Although Klimas – along with Fury’s side – have kept the UK option open, it’s looking more likely to land in the Middle East given the difference in financial gain available there.
If that is the case, it will be the second time in as many fights that Usyk has travelled to Saudi to fight – the last time being a successful outing in his rematch with Anthony Joshua, taking his tally over the former champion to 2-0.
